The Journey Begins

The morning was grey and humid, saturated with the pregnant condensation of low-lying thunderclouds. Our departure window had finally arrived, and there was no ceasing the call to the open road – no matter what threatened from the heavens. Hoyle and I (of Hoyle,Tanner) were about as ready as any two gentleman could be. The Jeep was loaded down. The cargo topper packed. A two-month supply of gear was stuffed and hidden in every crack and crevice of our road-worthy machine. Cedars climbed aboard first, freshly bathed and groomed, his simple dog’s brain afloat with foggy ideas of distant settings, towering mountain ranges and foreign shores.  After one last look around Lafayette, we allowed those same far-flung imaginings to overtake Hoyle and I as we raised the sail and kicked the V8 into gear. Long live the open road. May our flight be fancy and our footpath free.
